LOV-Story #Mataf

Did you know that…

…the golden chandeliers in the Holy Mosque of Mecca – Al Masjid Al Haram – come from Austria, casting a warm and harmonious glow over millions of worshippers?

Mataf: A Place That Never Empties

Stepping through the grand Al Fath Gate of the mosque, one is immediately overwhelmed: above hangs an imposing 7-meter chandelier, bathing the space in a warm, soothing light and making the architecture shine. Expansive spaces, quietude, soft illumination, and the gentle movement of people everywhere – all of this evokes a sense of awe. Before you lies the Kaaba, the heart of Islam, and surrounding it stretches the Mataf, a circular area forming part of the mosque’s vast courtyard. Here, worshippers perform the Tawaf, circling the Kaaba seven times. This ritual is more than mere motion; it symbolizes unity, direction, and the deep connection between humanity and God. To an outsider, it may seem like an endless loop, yet for the believers, it is a moment of inner peace – a tradition handed down through centuries.

A Circle of Millions of Stories

Entering the Mataf is like witnessing a mesmerizing spectacle. Millions of people from all corners of the globe move in a silent, orderly rhythm. Every step is part of an age-old practice. To the observer, it almost resembles a dance – mysterious, harmonious, and hypnotic.

Not everyone in the mosque moves in circles. Many pause in prayer areas, admire the architecture, or simply absorb the unique atmosphere. The Tawaf is performed solely by pilgrims authorized for this sacred ritual, often dressed in traditional attire such as the Ihram, symbolizing unity and purity. The entire process follows rules and centuries-old ceremonial practices, giving meaning to every step.

Where Light Carries Tradition

Amidst this dynamic scene, the light stands out: the golden chandeliers, meticulously crafted and harmoniously integrated into the architecture, bathe the Mataf in warm, calming illumination. The Mataf alone features 560 individually designed chandeliers, made from premium materials, gilded, and adorned with Arabic calligraphy – an impressive blend of craftsmanship and cultural sensitivity. Yet these golden chandeliers are not only beautiful; they are remarkably durable. Tested to bear four times their own weight and withstand temperatures up to 50°C, they are built to last.

Traditional Arabic golden lighting combines beauty with function, guiding the gaze without distraction, and accompanying the worshippers’ movements almost invisibly. Here, light becomes a storyteller: it creates atmosphere, highlights details, makes the space tangible, and narrates culture, history, and spirituality.

A Place That Connects People

Leaving the mosque, one carries with them a sense of calm, history, and light. The illumination accompanies the faithful, providing orientation and ambiance without ever dominating the scene. Culture, architecture, and spirituality converge here into a singular experience. One hears the quiet murmur of prayers, feels the warmth of the light on their skin, and senses the unique atmosphere of a sacred space.

The mosque itself is an architectural marvel: spanning 1.7 million square meters, accommodating over 2 million worshippers, and repeatedly expanded over the centuries, most recently with a modern extension of the Mataf. The space tells stories of people, rituals, solidarity, and reverence.

The Glow of Tradition

The Mataf in Mecca demonstrates that high-quality mosque lighting is far more than technology. It brings architecture to life, supports rituals, and allows individuals to experience their personal moments. Each chandelier is handcrafted with the utmost care, combining Austrian precision with cultural sensitivity to create an atmosphere that touches millions of people every year.

Here, light is not merely seen - it is felt, experienced, and deeply remembered.
