Lights of Vienna completes €90 million lighting project for the Mataf Extension at the Holy Mosque in Mecca
Austrian manufacturer supplies 550 gold-gilded customized chandeliers and luminaires for the world’s largest mosque, Al-Masdschid al-Harām
Guntramsdorf, December 09, 2025 — Lights of Vienna, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of premium custom lighting systems, has completed the manufacturing and supply of all chandeliers and luminaires for the Mataf Extension at the Holy Mosque in Mecca, one of the most visited religious sites in the world.
The project involved the delivery of 10 different lighting types and a total of around 550 custom-made chandeliers and luminaires, all produced from high-grade stainless steel and gilded with more than 200 kg of 24-karat gold. The project value is approximately €90 million.
Austrian High-End Lighting Technology for the World’s Largest Mosque
The installation includes the “Al Fath Gate Chandelier,” the largest fixture in the Mataf project, measuring seven meters in diameter, ten meters in height, and weighing three tons. All units were designed to withstand extreme climatic conditions, meet high safety standards, and fulfill the operational demands of the world’s most visited mosque.
“Delivering a project of this scale and significance demonstrates our ability to realize large-scale, technically sophisticated lighting solutions with cultural depth,” says Alexander Oborny, Managing Partner at Lights of Vienna. “We are proud that our commitment to innovation, technical excellence, and artisanal craftsmanship is receiving such strong international recognition.”
This commission continues Lights of Vienna’s long-standing involvement in Mecca’s expansion. The company previously supplied more than 4,450 chandeliers and luminaires for the Shamiya Extension of the Holy Mosque.
Proven Safety and Performance Under Extreme Conditions
All chandeliers and luminaires underwent extensive performance and safety tests:
• Structural load test: Five times the overall weight using sandbags, according to ISO standards
• Waterproofing: Passed IP43 spray test
• Heat resistance: Fully operational at continuous ambient temperatures of 50°C
All tests were passed without limitations, significantly surpassing international CB certification requirements.
The delivered fixtures include:
• Round and octagonal gold-plated chandeliers made of high-grade stainless steel, featuring Arabic calligraphy and handcrafted premium glass
• Gold-plated ceiling and wall luminaires
• Durable outdoor luminaires with specially developed drivers for extreme climate conditions
• The project’s centerpiece: the “Al Fath Gate Chandelier,” an octagonal, gold-plated chandelier with a 7-meter diameter and 360,000 lumens of output
All fixtures incorporate high-efficiency LED systems with outputs of up to 150 lm/W and a CRI of 90%.
Long-Term Partnership: Continued Collaboration with the Saudi Binladin Group
The project reinforces Lights of Vienna’s ongoing collaboration with the Saudi Binladin Group, one of the region’s largest construction companies, and highlights Austria’s role as an exporter of bespoke lighting for large-scale international projects.
Lighting Design for the Mataf Area
The Mataf area surrounds the Kaaba, where millions of Muslims perform the Tawaf pilgrimage ritual each year. Lights of Vienna developed all customized chandeliers and luminaires to maintain aesthetic continuity with Islamic architectural traditions while meeting modern engineering demands.
Production took place at the company’s Austrian facilities, supported by specialist partners in Austria and Italy.
